What is GST/HST Return?
GST (Goods and Services Tax)/ HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) return filings is the process of reporting to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) how much GST/HST your business collected from customers and how much you paid on business expenses. You then either remit the difference or claim a refund.
If your business is registered for GST/HST, you must file periodic returns — even if you had no sales in the reporting period.
Who Needs to File?
- You’re registered for GST/HST with CRA
- You have crossed the $30,000 small supplier threshold in worldwide taxable sales over 4 consecutive calendar quarters
- You voluntarily registered for GST/HST
- This applies to most businesses, self-employed individuals, corporations, and partnerships.
What’s Included in a GST Return?
- Total taxable sales, revenue, and other supplies
- GST/HST collected from customers
- GST/HST paid on business purchases and expenses (Input Tax Credits)
- Net tax payable or refund
When Are GST Returns Due?
- Annual filers: Due 3 months after fiscal year-end
- Quarterly and Monthly filers: Due 1 month after end of each period
- Late filings may result in penalties and interest.
Quick. Compliant. Done Right the First Time.
