WHY US
Who Must Register with WSCC?
The agency is officially named the Workers’ Safety & Compensation Commission (WSCC)—often referred to simply as WSCC. It administers no-fault workplace insurance and occupational health and safety oversight for both Nunavut (NU) and the Northwest Territories (NWT). WSCC is unique in Canada as the only compensation agency covering more than one territory. For historical and operational reasons, Nunavut and NWT share the same board, leadership, and administrative structure. If you operate in Nunavut or NWT and hire one or more workers (including contractors, seasonal, part-time, or non-residents working more than 10 days per year), you must register as an employer within 10 business days of starting operations. Temporary employers—working for 10 days or fewer, and not hiring residents—may be exempt under specific conditions.
You must register if you operate in:
- Construction
- Manufacturing
- Retail and service industries
- Landscaping or maintenance
- Cleaning and janitorial services
